University of Waterloo

Earth Sciences & Chemistry Building

The University of Waterloo’s ESC Building underwent a major transformation, modernizing outdated 1960s laboratories into a contemporary, flexible research environment. The renovation supports diverse faculty and graduate research programs while improving safety, efficiency, and long-term adaptability.

Lab Furniture & Casework

Eight newly rebuilt laboratory zones were outfitted with modular painted steel casework, wall shelving, and ceiling service panels to support a wide range of research needs. Custom layouts ensure each group has balanced access to benching, storage, and utilities.

The project also incorporates Sigma Flex™ Systems, using 6" cores and benchtop uprights that allow teams to reconfigure workstations and utilities quickly as research evolves. Framed glass cabinets suspended on the Sigma Flex™ uprights maintain clear sightlines throughout the labs, creating an open, visually connected environment while still providing essential storage.

Fume Hoods

The laboratories feature SafeGuard™ Fume Hoods equipped with Automatic Sash Operators (ASO2s) — a major contributor to the project’s sustainability and safety goals. The ASO2s automatically close the sash when the hood is not in active use, significantly reducing exhaust volume and lowering energy consumption.

The project also includes Optima™ Fume Hoods with ASO2s, designed for ADA accessibility and ergonomic use, providing safe, energy-efficient, and comfortable operation for all researchers.
